Tetris Elements
Tetris Elements is a collection of six Tetris games, one of which is the classic version. Each of the other five are similar in gameplay, but also have different features that influence the overall strategy.
Besides classic Tetris, there are: Stratosphere, which features meteors that can either help or hurt in eliminating rows; Earthquake, where tremors shake the falling shapes and move them around; Tempest, a double Tetris game where players are switched back and forth between screens; Ice, which has falling icicles that will knock into the falling shapes and make them crash down; and Fire, where heat can cause a chain reaction and melt multiple rows.
Each of the games comes with its own theme music, but players can import MP3 files and listen to their own tunes, which I would recommend, as the in-game music is all in a techno beat. I couldn't find any instructions on how to add your own tunes, but they can probably be accessed by adding them to the folder where the other songs reside.
Installation is easy, and the interface is simple. Players simply choose which Tetris game they want to play, and begin playing. Stopping a game is also easy, and players can return to the main menu with a few clicks. There is a general option screen on the main menu, and there is also a more involved one with each game. This second options menu is where players will choose what songs they want to hear.
The graphics are adequate, but could have been a lot better. These are what you might expect from an online game of Tetris.
I'm not a big fan of Tetris, as I prefer Dr. Mario, which uses colors instead of shapes to match and clear rows. However, I did enjoy playing the variations, with my favorite being the Stratosphere game, where the meteors can ricochet in a BreakOut-like manner, and take out shapes. This is a good presentation of Tetris, with plenty of variety for added enjoyment. Tetris fans should enjoy this edition.
Gameplay: 6.5
The gameplay offers a decent amount of variety to the classic Tetris mode, but it's still pretty much the same across the board.
Graphics: 6
The graphics are pretty bland, and could have been a lot better.
Sound: 6
Ditto for the music, but players can add their own tunes.
Difficulty: Medium
The games begin easily, but increase in difficulty as players continue playing.
Concept: 6
While there are added features to the games, there really isn't anything new here. However, people who will be getting this game won't want anything drastically different anyway, they will want Tetris.
Multiplayer: N/A
A multiplayer mode would have spiced things up, ala Dr. Mario.
Overall: 6.5
This is a good version of Tetris, but there isn't anything really new or different here from other versions. Also, there are many clones that are playable online for free. However, for fans of the real Tetris, this is an enjoyable outing
