The Messenger 2009
The Messenger is a 2009 drama film starring Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson, Jena Malone, and Samantha Morton.
It is the directorial debut of Oren Moverman, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Alessandro Camon.
The film premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and was in competition at Berlin International Film Festival 2009 where it won a Silver Bear '09 - Best Screenplay and Berlinale Peace Film Award '09[2].
The movie got the first prize for the 2009 Deauville American Film Festival.
Plot
Will Montgomery (Ben Foster), a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant who has returned home from Iraq, is assigned to the Army’s Casualty Notification service. Montgomery is partnered with officer Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson), to give notice to the families of fallen soldiers. The Sergeant is drawn to Olivia Pitterson (Samantha Morton), whom he has delivered the news of her husband’s death.

The film currently holds a 90% 'Fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 50 reviews.[3] The film also currently holds a 76% 'Generally favorable reviews' rating on MetaCritic based on 27 reviews. [4] Woody Harrelson's role was critcally praised, leading to a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. [5]
