RAR Password Cracker is one of the many tools able to crack RAR archive passwords. However, I liked it better than other tools because it's easy to use and has useful features. It supports two operation modes. It uses either brute force to crack your password, or the dictionary method. The program can estimate the time it takes to crack a specific password. This is nice because you can see if cracking that specific password is worth your time.

Cracking a three letter word, composed of numbers and lowercase letters took about half an hour on my computer (Athlon64 3000+ processor) when I used brute force. When you use the dictionary method to crack a password, the duration depends on the size of the dictionary. The dictionary files (word lists) are not included in the installation, but they can be purchased separately using a link on the publisher's website. These files are in fact text files, so you can create your own if you want.

The program displays a current performance rate. I guess this performance rate should be the number of words tried each second. I'm not sure though because I couldn't find what the "p/s" symbol (displayed next to the performance rate) stands for.

Pluses: If you close the application while it's cracking a password you can pick up later where you left off. Resuming is possible because the program saves a project file, which contains information about the progress of the cracking process. I also liked that I could set any project to resume its work automatically upon the next Windows startup.

Hard disk defragmenting is on the menu today. And you are all aware that keeping your files defragmented will make your computer running smooth and fast. What do you use to unclog your machine?

I have tested a few softwares all designed to arrange the files on the hard disk. I must admit that the first defragmenting application was the Windows defragmenting tool. I was impressed by its results, but I soon found out that there are some other softwares that have the same mission and do a better job. Among the best defragmenters I have encountered there is Ashampoo's Magical Defrag and Power Defragmenter.

Surfing the Internet I bumped into Ultimate Defrag. The name draw my attention immediately and I decided to put it to a test. The software is a DiskTrix product and the price for putting it to work on your computer is $39.95. Of course, the users get to test it first for a trial period of 30 days.

When I first opened the application I was surprised by the interface. It was something I was not expecting in a hard disk maintenance tool. The application window displays a big pie that represents your hard drive. In the lower part of this section you will find a Legend explaining you what the colors of the little squares mean.

In the left part there is a sort of a panel that shows the user the local drives and the desired defragmenting method. Once you click on one of the drives, you will be provided some information related to it like file count, number of the contiguous files, the number of fragmented files and the degree of fragmentation. Except for the degree of fragmentation, every other information is accompanied by the corresponding size in megabytes.

The application is very easy to work with and the few steps you have to take will bring the desired result. All you need is patience for the software to defragment your drives. The analysis of the drive (before performing the defragmentation) will not take
too long and you will be provided with the number of fragmented files and their size.

After the analysis, right-clicking on the drive letter will open a context menu that contains the option Volume Info. Choosing it will show you all the information you need about it (name, file system, serial number, size, free space, number of clusters, number of free clusters, sectors per cluster, etc.).

Before moving to the actual defragmenting I have to tell you that the program has four defragmentation methods, out of which three have customizable options. The first method is Fragmented Files Only and is to be used when you need a quick defragmentation.

The second method is Consolidate and this will allow the user to select High Performance and Archive which will place the High Performance files to the outside tracks (faster access) and the archives to the inner tracks (slower access). The third option in here is Put directories close to MFT and choosing it will significantly improve the hard drive performance because of the dialog between the MFT (Master File Table) and the directories.

Folder/File Name method contains the same options as Consolidate, but the difference is that this method will layout the files on the hard disk, according to folder name order and each files in the folder will be sorted by name. If you want to set a certain order then you should go into the Tools menu and choose Custom option in the High Performance section and drag the files in the order you want.

The last of the defragmenting methods is Recency. The additional options in here are Last Accessed, Last Modified and placing the data (oldest and most recent) on the outer or inner tracks of the hard disk. My humble opinion says that this is the most complete defragmenting method of all. Of course it is also the most difficult to configure.

The Options menu of the software lets you configure the High Performance and Archive options. The flexibility of the software allows the user to include some file types in both High Performance and Archive. There may be some files that you do not want to defragment and in this case you should look at the bottom of the Options window for the Excluded Files section.

Even though I can handle heat and thirst pretty well, I have a problem with summer. It's not about me, it's about my hardware. Last August I lost a hard drive only 9 months old, probably due to this reason, since my room temperature was between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius for over one month and the computer ran non-stop.

When hard drives have to go through periods like that mentioned above, their performance and health parameters change to reflect their current condition. A monitoring program can be extremely useful to inform the user when to expect a crash and take adequate measures in time (backup the data and sell the drive, for example...).

These being said, let's move on to the topic. Today's hard drive monitoring application is called HDDlife Pro, it's close to version 3.0 and I ran it in a 14 day trial mode. HDDlife was a free program in the past, and now you can run it as the Pro version and after the trial period expires it switches automatically to freeware mode. The differences between these two versions are minor and are not my concern now.

First, you have to download the 4MB installation kit, then install it and fire it up. The program's interface is easy to use and contains all the information you need in its main window. If you have more than one drive installed on your computer, you will find their info available in separate tabs.

What info can we get about our hard drives using HDDlife Pro?

First of all, in the upper area of the main window you can see the model and size of your hard drive. Below it, you can check the current drive temperature and total work time. The drive temperature is not displayed in real time, but using the sensor polling interval that you can set in the Options area (the default one is 5 minutes).

The health status and performance of the hard drive are displayed using two percentage bars, and the 100% values are considered to be the ones of a brand new drive. Unfortunately, there is no hint about how these values
are calculated, since you can't check individual SMART parameters, so all you can do is trust HDDlife Pro.

In the main window you can also find a conclusion about the state of your disc and in the last cell there is a chart showing information about the use of the disk – the green color represents free space, while the red color stands for the occupied space.

The Options of the program are rich and can help you control its behavior in detail.

You can make HDDlife start with Windows, change the drive polling interval (there are three items to be checked – health, temperature and occupied space).

Warnings can be sent via the network or by email. This program can also play a sound or turn off your computer when one of your drives has "health problems".

One last feature that I will tell you about is the ability to use skins for the drive icons displayed using the AnywhereView technology (you can check the free space on a drive from any application).
